When his kids grew up and were to be enrolled in a school, he decided that he would use ‘Bachchan’ as the surname for the entire family as he was against all the caste system.

In those days (and even today in some parts), people had a habit of deducing the caste of the person by his surname and treat him accordingly.

So, to do away with this discrimination, the family name ‘Srivastav’ was replaced with Bachchan. As time passed the family adopted this name for all practical purposes.
